Abstract in Lingua Inglese | The post-classical botanical exploration of crete in the venetian period, when physicians, apothecaries and gardeners like O. Belli, G. Casabona and P. Alpini collected plant material and had it cultivated in the botanical gardens in Padua and Pisa. Both J. Pitton de Tournefort in 1700 and J. Sibthorp in 1786 visited Crete on their voyages to the Levant and brought a rich harvest of plant specimens home. Whereas the former's collections were quickly published and distributed, this was not the case with the latter's expedition. Due to the early death of J. Sibthorp and the scope of the project, it took nearly half a century to have the results - the famous Flora Graeca - published. Special emphasis is placed on the important role played by plant illustrators in Crete - notably G. Dyckmann, C. Aubriet and F. Bauer - who have greatly contributed to the works by G. Casabona, J. Pitton and J. Sibthorp, respectively. |
